Taking out anything from home at night, especially the trash is also not good. Empty bottles on the table are a bad sign. Other forbidden acts are giving watches and knives as presents. Watches are believed to lead to parting, while knives lead to conflicts and quarrels. There are other more pleasant superstitions. During Christmas young girls get together and hold fortune-telling nights. They use some old-fashioned techniques to predict the important things in their life, for example, the date of a wedding, the name of a future husband, etc. Other pleasant superstition is connected with spiders. It is not common to kill spiders in the house, because these insects are believed to bring good luck and money. There are many other omens and superstitions in the world, but they all depend on the degree of your belief. Some people refuse to believe in such things unless there is a scientific reasoning behind it.Многие люди суеверны. Они верят в недоказанные и загадочные факты. Более того, они их побаиваются. Полагают, что часы приводят к расставанию, а ножи приводят к конфликтам и ссорам. Существуют и другие, более приятные суеверия. Во время рождественских святок молодые девушки собираются и устраивают ночи гаданий. С помощью старомодных методов они узнают о важных событиях в своей жизни, например, дату свадьбы, или имя будущего мужа и т.д. Другое приятное суеверие связано с пауками. В доме не принято убивать пауков, потому что считается, что эти насекомые приносит удачу и деньги. В мире есть много других примет и суеверий, но все они зависят от степени вашей веры. Некоторые люди отказываются верить в такие вещи, если они научно не мотивированы.

In Britain, people believed that the Devil was a nut-gatherer. At Halloween, nuts were used as magic charms.

If a girl puts a sprig of rosemary herb and a silver sixpence under her pillow on Halloween night, she will see her future husband in a dream.

If a candle flame suddenly turns blue, there’s a ghost nearby.

If you ring a bell on Halloween, it will scare evil spirits away.

If you see a spider on Halloween, it could be the spirit of a dead loved one who is watching you.

Knocking on wood keeps bad luck away.

You should walk around your home three times backwards and counterclockwise before sunset on Halloween to ward off evil spirits.

To prevent ghosts coming into the house at Halloween, bury animal bones or a picture of an animal near the doorway.

A person born on Halloween can see and talk to spirits.

If you go to a crossroads at Halloween and listen to the wind, you will learn all the most important things that will befall you during the next twelve months.

When bobbing for apples, it is believed that the first person to bite an apple would be the first to marry.

Peel an apple from top to bottom. The person with the longest unbroken peel would be assured the longest life. If you threw the apple peel over your shoulder, the initial it forms upon landing is the initial of your future mate.

If a bat flies around a house 3 times, it is a death omen.

If bats come out early and fly around playfully, then it is a sign of good weather to come.

If a bat flies into a house it is a sign that ghosts are about and maybe the ghost let the bat in!

The number 13 is considered unlucky in US. Most of the buildings with elevators did not have a floor named the 13th floor. The 13th floor may take a variety of forms, as level 14, as «12A» or «M» (the thirteenth letter of the English alphabet), or closing the 13th floor to public occupancy or access

Число 13 считается числом, приносящим несчастья. Большинство зданий с лифтом, не имеют этаж с номером 13. Тринадцатый этаж в этом случае может называться, как часть 14 этажа, как 12 А или этаж М (13я буква английского алфавита), или вообще этаж может быть закрыт для публичного пользования и доступа.

Do you believe in good luck and bad luck? Most people in the world have some superstitions. These are a few British superstitions with long traditions.

— It’s bad luck to see just one magpie.

Очень многие приметы и суеверия связаны с зеркалами. И неудивительно, зеркала всегда ассоциировались с чем-то магическим. Например, никому не хочется случайно разбить зеркало – согласно поверью, это приведет к семи годам несчастья или, по другим источникам, к семи бедам. Если вы случайно что-то забыли дома, и вам пришлось вернуться, обязательно посмотритесь в зеркало перед выходом, а еще лучше, покажите себе язык – таким образом вы избежите возможных неприятностей и проблем. There are very many signs and superstitions connected with mirrors. Not surprisingly, the mirrors have always been associated with something magical. For example, no one wants to accidentally break the mirror – according to legend it will lead to the seven years of misery or, according to other sources, to the seven disasters. If you happen to forget something at home, and you had to get back for it, be sure to look in the mirror before going out, or better yet, show out your tongue to yourself – that way you’ll avoid possible troubles and problems.

И вот я решила записать подкаст про распространенные в современной России суеверия. В этот подкаст попали только те суеверия и приметы, которые знаю лично я или читатели Multilinguablog. То есть все суеверия, упоминаемые в подкасте, актуальны. Сотни тысяч людей хватаются за пуговицу при виде черной кошки, перебегающей дорогу, и ожидают к обеду женщину, если со стола упала вилка.

So, I’ve decided to record a podcast about superstitions known by most modern Russians. In this podcast you will here only the superstitions that me and the readers of Multilinguablog know. These beliefs are widespread and used to this day. Отдельно хотелось бы сказать про «нельзя выносить вечером мусор«. Чаще всего «объясняют» этот запрет тем, что «денег не будет». Есть же и другой вариант, который я озвучиваю, про домового, питающегося остатками с барского стола.
